What is Reiki massage?

Reiki massage is an alternative practice, a discipline that aims to cure diseases of any kind by transferring energy from the hands of the practitioner to the recipient. It is believed that Reiki massage has its roots in an ancient past, but that its practice was developed in the second half of the 19th century, in Japan, by Mikao Usui.

Deriving from the words “rei” – spiritual and “ki” – vital energy, Reiki massage is considered as a spiritual practice used as a form of alternative therapeutic treatment to treat different types of conditions, both physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, through rebalancing vital energy.

Concepts and philosophy underlying the Reiki massage

Reiki is practically based on the existence of the vital energy that flows and animates any living being that is present throughout the universe. The changes in the energy flow lead to the appearance of diseases and different conditions. In other words, diseases (in whatever form they appear) are due to imbalances of vital energy. The Reiki practitioner can, by placing hands that may or may not be in contact with the recipient, transfer energy and remedy imbalances and promote the healing of diseases. Depending on the school, this energy may come from the practitioner or may derive from the surrounding universe. Therefore, in the latter case, the practitioner is a means by which the energy passes, flows, and the massage is transmitted to the recipient.

How it’s done?

Reiki massage can be performed anywhere, however, it is preferable to be performed in special massage centers, in a calm and quiet place, with diffused lights, fragrant aromas and relaxing music that favor relaxation. Nudity is not necessary, but it is important to remove the metal objects (for example, jewelry, belts, etc.) and, possibly, jewelry with stones, as these objects can interfere with the flow of energy that the practitioner should transfer to the individual.

Reiki does not involve manipulations as is the case with other forms of massage, but provides for the simple laying on of the hands of the practitioner on the recipient and the execution of the movements without coming into contact with the body of the latter or placing the hands of the practitioner on the recipient and exerting a slight pressure. The type of movements performed, the possibility of coming into contact with the recipient’s body or not and the areas most affected by Reiki practice, depend substantially on the type of disorder to be treated.

What are the benefits of Reiki massage?

Reiki practice brings physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Going into more detail, the execution of the Reiki massage promotes psychophysical relaxation, eliminating stress and anxiety; muscle relaxation; elimination of toxins from the body; reducing or eliminating acute or chronic pain; stimulates the immune system; rebalancing the sleep-wake cycle and more.

Are there any contraindications to Reiki massage?

Since no particular substances are used in Reiki massage (for example, massage oils) and since no high pressure manipulations are performed, except for light pressure applied with the palms of practitioners’ hands, this practice can be considered one without contraindications. However, as a precaution, people who have had recent fractures and pregnant women should seek medical advice before having a massage session.
